Telkom invests in managed access transport systems with Grintek Telecom

As part of its drive to provide enhanced communications services to its customers, Telkom has invested in a sophisticated managed access and transport system with leading communications supplier Grintek Telecom.

This was announced by Gerard Rebelo, sales and marketing manager at Grintek Telecom who says the explosive growth in the use of the Internet by SA businesses has resulted in a similarly massive growth in the demand for leased lines from Telkom.

"This steep growth curve will continue to accelerate over the next three years placing significant pressure on Telkom to ensure it maintains the quality levels demanded by business. As companies become increasingly dependent on the Internet and their network-based communications, they require 99.9 percent up-time."

Rebelo says Telkom will have to ensure that it has the technology to manage this growth and be in a position to enter into service level agreements (SLAs) especially when and telecommunications services in SA are deregulated.

Grintek Telecom is facilitating this dramatic growth by meeting Telkom's requirements and ensuring that it has a sophisticated network system in place that equal standards found in first world countries.

To meet this requirement Telkom has entered into a contract for the supply of the Tellabs MartisDXX managed access and transport system supplied by Grintek Telecom. The MartisDXX allows Telkom to satisfy the demands by business to provide faster Internet access as well as for normal data communications between branches, divisions and on a global scale.

"The MartisDXX solution helps Telkom in offering high quality services by providing managed access and transport facilities cost-effectively," says Rebelo.

"Until recently transfer rates of 64Kb/sec were considered more than adequate, but as more and more employees are given access to the Internet, we are seeing increased requests for 2Mb/sec transfer rates. The MartisDXX product meets this need and Telkom is specifying it for use in SA. It's also used in more than 60 countries around the world," he says.

Telkom is using the product to manage its leased line network and without any further hardware investment it is in a position to create a number of value added services using the Martis network management system to help it differentiate itself in a deregulated telecommunications market.

Such services may include offering quality service agreements whereby Telkom will be able to guarantee service levels and offer disaster recovery and Time dependent services amongst others.
