Fixed-line operator Telkom today lost its head of IT, Sammy Gumbe, in a car accident.
Details are sketchy, but the company has confirmed Gumbe died this morning due to injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle accident.
Gumbe is a Telkom veteran, having joined the company in 1992. He held various positions at the company, before being appointed as the managing executive of IT solutions, taking over from Bashier Sallie, in 2009.
Nombulelo Moholi, MD of Telkom SA, says: “Sammy was with Telkom for 18 years. During this time, he held various senior management positions in IT and HR, and consistently distinguished himself on both a professional and personal level.
“I came to know him as a man of character whose spontaneity and willingness to assist won him many admirers,” she adds.
“On a professional level, his knowledge of the ICT industry always stood Telkom in good stead, especially in the critical position of managing executive. Sammy's passing leaves a void that will not easily be filled.”
