Telkom has confirmed that Africa Online CEO John Joseph died in a boating accident in Mombasa on Friday.
He had been in charge of the wholly owned subsidiary since early 2007.
Telkom CEO Reuben September says Joseph was an invaluable member of the Telkom team. "He was a larger than life character who had been integral to establishing and building the Africa Online brand and developing a portfolio of service offerings across all segments in nine African countries. We are deeply saddened by his passing."
A Telkom statement says Joseph occupied various positions at Telkom since 1995 before ascending to the CEO position at Africa Online in 2007. In 2000, he was tasked with establishing Telkom Wholesale Marketing, which is now a communication wholesale provider.
Joseph was appointed as Africa Online`s CEO after Telkom acquired it in February last year. The company is a provider of Internet services in Africa and a subsidiary of the African Lakes Corporation.
As its new CEO, Joseph relocated to Nairobi, Kenya, in April 2007 to establish a corporate head office. The company has operations in Cote d`Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
Telkom has not yet announced who will replace Joseph.
