Telkom Mobile has unveiled its "Prepaid SIM Only Internet Starter Pack" data offer, which comes with a SIM card and 2.4GB of data - provided in 12 tranches of 200MB - for R49, once off.

The SIM-only starter pack can be used on most devices including tablets and smartphones, or it can be inserted into a data modem to be used on a laptop or desktop.

Telkom Mobile will also provide technical support for the first time Internet user. KG Moncho, product development executive, says the company gives new users a guide providing information on purchasing data bundles, viewing and managing data bundle balances, and support contact details.

Data allocation is done on the first of every month and will be valid until the end of that calendar month.

In addition, customers can buy additional data bundles once they have depleted their monthly data allocation.

By comparison, Cell C charges R89 for 100MB a month for a year, or R189 to double the data. Its 3GB offer, valid for a year, is R299 once off.

Vodacom offers a SIM-only deal with 500MB of data for R39 a month, on a 24-month contract. A Gig is R69 a month, and the top-level offer of 3GB is R169 each month, for two years. MTN does not appear to offer SIM-only data deals.

"The Internet has become a way of life, and it is our goal to make it accessible and affordable to all," says Moncho. The offer is available on the Telkom Mobile 3G/LTE network.
