More than 40 small, micro and medium enterprises (SMMEs), from the Western Cape were honoured at a certification ceremony last week, for passing a gruelling `Building Entrepreneurial Capacity` course.
For most, this certificate represented a chance of growing their businesses into a more profitable venture.
The National African Federation Chamber of Commerce (NAFCOC) approached Telkom with a list of SMMEs that were selected for training. Telkom then short-listed 40 of the start-up businesses that were looking to expand.
Telkom`s Procurement Services through Telkom`s Centre for Learning put the 40 SMMEs through its intensive `Building Entrepreneurial Capacity` course. The training was customised in partnership with NAFCOC to ensure that the needs of SMMEs in SA were addressed.
SMMEs face great challenges in running their businesses, not necessarily because they do not have the right skills, but sometimes they just need to be shown how. Telkom, as a successful, profitable company, is proud to be involved in growing and developing SMMEs. Providing this training forms part of Telkom`s BEE Capacity Building and Supplier Development initiative.
Feedback from the SMMEs about the training was very positive and Telkom will certainly continue to assist in empowering these businesses. Once the training was completed, some SMMEs that operated in the same sector began talking about amalgamating business or sharing resources.
The business streams represented varied from cleaning services, baking, hair salons, security services, etc.
