Telkom offers safe access to Internet banking

Johannesburg, 29 Jul 2003

As the South African online community recovers from the shock of recent revelations of hacker attacks, Telkom has gone out with the positive reassurance that it still offers a safe way for access to online banking through its CyberTrade service.

CyberTrade is a standalone independent with dial-up and fixed access that offers a number of business services, including secure gateways to all major .

"The gateways do not enter the Internet public domain but are managed from our state-of the-art data centre in Centurion. Telkom charges a monthly subscription and a per-minute charge based on the time spent online and various package options are offered to manage these costs effectively," explains Telkom Business Integration Services Executive, Rikus Matthyser.

When signing up for CyberTrade, customers are given a unique username and password. One ShareCall national number is used to dial into the service, which means that calls from anywhere in SA are charged at local rates.

"CyberTrade secures its service throughout its network. Because all users are authenticated, any person infringing on the rights of other users can be tracked down and dealt with immediately," says Matthyser.

Other services offered to CyberTrade users include an e-mail address with virus-scanning and optional access to the Internet.
