Telkom presents Contact Me

Johannesburg, 07 Dec 2005

Telkom has announced a Contact Me, a "please call me" for fixed line telephone users. There is no subscription required and the service is free from any fixed line phone, including payphones and Telkom`s PrePaidFones.

"Contact Me enables customers to send a voice message to another landline or a cellphone absolutely free of charge," says Stephen White, Telkom executive for product development.

The user dials 10152 and is prompted to record their name. The system repeats the name to verify, followed by the prompt to dial the 10-digit number the message is going to.

One of the key factors that differentiates this service from the SMS services is that the name is recorded in the person`s own voice, thus personalising and authenticating the message, according to Telkom`s statement.

"We are continuously working on introducing new services that will allow our customers to enjoy a world class communication experience," says White.

The statement also notes that Contact Me is currently not available from or to international call destinations. Cellular phones will only be able to access the 10152 number from February 2006, it says.

Emergency services

Telkom and Netcare have also come to an agreement to introduce Telkom`s Netcare911 Services. The service is available to all Telkom residential subscribers and any persons on the property, free of charge.

The services include on-scene medical attention, ambulance or helicopter transportation in a medical emergency, 24-hour access to medical advice from qualified professionals, rape and trauma counselling. The emergency number is 0860 911 900.
