Telkom prepaid phone users can now recharge their phones online or telephonically instead of buying vouchers from vendors.

The PrepaidFone service was made possible through a partnership with local service provider Cointel.

Telkom says there was a 9.7% growth in its prepaid phone users between April and September, with the total number of users now at 886 000.

"The PrepaidFone market is growing and we will continue to look for new and innovative ways to make using the phone easier and more convenient," says Thami Magazi, Telkom`s managing executive of consumer markets.

To use the new PrepaidFone account, users must register by providing personal information, including their debit or credit card account details. All charges are then billed directly to this account and collected through the use of Cointel`s SimTransact technology, Simplus.

"Users` personal data and debit or credit card information are stored securely and will only be charged for recharge requests. Recharges can only be made by the user or a person authorised by the user," says Gavin Krugel, chief e-business officer at Cointel.

Online applications can be made at www.telkomrecharge.co.za or telephonically by dialling 080 724 2743.
