Telkom quietly deploys another exec

Johannesburg, 25 Jun 2007

SA's fixed-line giant Telkom has deployed another of its senior management team to broadcast start-up Telkom Media.

While the parent company has not issued a statement on the matter, Telkom Media has confirmed Lourens van Niekerk - Telkom's ex-group executive of corporate finance treasury and specialised services - has been appointed as its CFO.

Van Niekerk is the ninth senior Telkom person - as far as ITWeb can determine - to leave the company since the beginning of the year. Five of these have moved to Telkom subsidiaries, Vodacom and Telkom Media.

However, it is understood the Johannesburg- and New York-listed company has decided not to issue further statements on exiting staff members unless it is required to do so through its listing obligations.

Acting positions

Of Telkom's six "chief" posts, only one position - that of CFO Kaushik Patel - is held in full capacity. The rest, including its top spot, are held in an acting capacity.

March: Wally Beelders, chief of sales and marketing, to Vodacom
Thami Msimango, CTO, to Vodacom
April: Papi Molotsane, CEO, destination unknown
Lazarus Zim, non-executive director, to focus on other interests
Justin Ramayia, executive in Telkom broadband office, to Multi-Links
May: Vincent Mashale, company secretary, destination unknown
Mandla Ncqobo, chief of corporate affairs, to Telkom Media
June: Steven Hayward, managing executive of retail marketing, destination unknown
Lourens van Niekerk, group exec of corporate finance treasury and specialised services, to Telkom Media

Previously, the company's COO, Reuben September, took the top spot on an interim basis when ex-CEO Papi Molotsane departed suddenly in April. Motlatsi Nzeku took September's COO role in an acting position following the move.

Godfrey Ntoele took over as acting chief sales and marketing officer following the earlier departure of Wally Beelders. Bashier Sallie became acting CTO, replacing Thami Msimango. Both Beelders and Msimango moved to Vodacom.

Ouma Rasethaba became acting chief of corporate affairs after Mandla Ncqbo was deployed to Telkom Media last month.

Senior management

Van Niekerk is the fourth senior manager to leave the company; however, like ex-executive in Telkom SA's office Justin Ramayia, who went to head part-owned Multi-Links, he remains within the group.

At this stage it is unknown what positions ex-company secretary Vincent Mashale and ex-managing executive of marketing Steven Hayward have taken, or which companies they have joined.

Van Niekerk joined Telkom in February 2000. Since then, he has been involved in a number of large financing transactions including the placement of Telkom's debut Euro Bond, syndicated loans and a number of local market finance structures.
