Four of Telkom`s top-performing suppliers walked off with gold awards at Telkom`s first-ever Supplier Awards function in Johannesburg.
Consistent delivery of quality, operational efficiency, price, service and Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) saw Telkom awarding Gold Supplier Awards certificates to Aberdare, PNB Import Export, World Telecom & Data and Nompilo Occupational Health.
Telkom`s CEO, Sizwe Nxasana, said that Telkom had initiated its annual Supplier Awards to recognise those of its Top 20 suppliers and its small, medium and micro enterprise (SMME) suppliers which consistently achieved good scores in its Supplier Performance Management (SPM) programme.
"Our Top 20 suppliers are identified by cross-functional sourcing teams by value, and are evaluated on a quarterly basis against a strict set of criteria through our SPM programme," he said.
Nxasana added that Telkom`s SPM programme was designed to encourage superior performance in the areas of quality, service, price, BEE and delivery.
"The programme has inherent benefits for both Telkom and its suppliers, and is intended to further enhance the relationship between both parties, which in turn promotes efficient and effective service delivery.
"The Telkom Supplier Awards reward not only the traditional large companies, but the top performing SMMEs are also given the opportunity to take their place as the future of SA`s economic growth," he said.
Telkom also awarded Silver Supplier Awards to ATC, Grintek Telecom, IST, PQ Africa, iNathi Technology Holdings, Nashua Kompano, Popsprint, SK Telekom and Truck King.
Bronze Supplier Awards went to Alcatel, EMC Computer Sytems, Ericcson, Hewlett Packard, Marpless, Spescom Transmission, Schlumberger, Siemens, Marconi Communications, Anzan Electronics and Radio Surveillance Security Services.
Telkom`s Managing Executive for Procurement Services, Bob Schlutow, said quality and black economic empowerment (BEE) formed the foundation of Telkom`s Supplier Award Programme.
"All Gold, Silver and Bronze winners have met our minimum Quetel or ISO 9000 criteria for their award. Telkom has also achieved outstanding results with BEE, and during the year ending 31 March 2001, we spent R1, 437 billion with Black SMME and Large Black Suppliers which have at least 50,1 % Black ownership," he said.
Schlutow added that during the same period, Telkom had spent R2, 433 billion with companies that have significant BEE programmes, as measured by Telkom.
"These two amounts total R3, 87 billion or 38 % of our total procurement spend with either Black Companies or companies with significant BEE programmes," he said.
