Telkom shuffles execs

Johannesburg, 13 Aug 2009

Telkom is making changes to its executive, starting with the promotion of group executive for information operations Bashier Sallie.

Sallie has been appointed as the company`s new senior managing executive of the wholesale and division. The appointment appears to be an indication that the company is beefing up its wholesale .

With increased international capacity hitting SA`s shores, in the form of several undersea cables and the upgrade of Telkom`s own SAT3/SAFE national capacity, an increase in demand is expected.

Telkom will now also have stiff competition in the market, with Neotel, MTN, Vodacom and Dark Africa laying thousands of kilometres of national fibre. Sallie seems well placed to head the company`s division, having worked at Telkom since 1986.

"As a member of executive leadership, Bashier has consistently excelled in every position entrusted to him. His appointment will bring undoubted talent and further stability to the Telkom SA business unit," says Telkom SA MD Pinky Moholi.

She adds that Sallie`s understanding of the business and his insights into industry trends have enabled him to make valuable contributions that have greatly benefitted Telkom. "We will rely heavily on his proven expertise and years of experience as we grow Telkom SA to new heights."

Sammy Gumbe will, for the time being, act in the position of executive for information operations.

The company has also promoted Marena Janse van Rensburg to head of finance for Telkom SA. She has been at Telkom since 2002.

The new appointments follow the company`s decision to restructure into three business units: Telkom SA, Telkom International and Telkom Data Centres. The company is streamlining its operations in an effort to cut costs.
