Telkom strike imminent

Johannesburg, 17 Aug 2011

After negotiations deadlocked, the CCMA intervened in a bid to find a solution to the impasse.

Two weeks ago, the CCMA told Telkom its offer of 5% was not reasonable, and sent it back to get board approval for an offer of between 7.5% and 8%.

According to trade union Solidarity, Telkom's final offer included a wage increase of 5% for the period April to September, and an additional one percentage point increase for the period October 2011 to March 2012. An increase equal to CPI +1% was offered for 2012.

Unions are demanding between 10% and 12%. In a statement, Solidarity said the trade unions have rejected Telkom's offer and a strike certificate will be issued to the trade unions this week.

While the Communication Workers Union was not immediately available for comment, it has been reported that the union's national leadership would meet today to discuss the possible nationwide industrial action.
