Telkom strike is over?

Johannesburg, 11 Aug 2009

Telkom has come to an agreement with the Communication Workers Union (CWU) over the wage dispute that began in late July.

Telkom's executive for employee relations, Meshack Dlamini, says: “The parties have met and have reached consensus.”

The telco did not stipulate what agreement had been reached, nor whether the union's decision to stage a stay-away today had gone through.

Union members staged an official strike last Monday and Tuesday, demanding that Telkom close the financial gap between workers before it implemented its 7.5% salary increase stipulated in a three-year agreement, which will end this year.

Telkom had initially put R78 million on the table to narrow wage gaps and elevate workers to a higher salary band. However, the union indicated in its earlier statements that Telkom had reduced this amount to R68 million.

The union indicated that 4 000 workers in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Western Cape and Mpumalanga had downed tools and were expected to stage a stay-away today. Telkom says only 1 600 members participated in last week's strike; however, it could not say whether the members went through with today's planned absence.

The company says it will take a roll-call today to determine the number of employees, if any, had decided not to come to work.

The dispute has been ongoing for over a year.

Meanwhile, Dlamini says the company is waiting for the union to take the agreed offer back to its members.

The union was not available for comment this morning to confirm whether it had reached an agreement with Telkom, or if it had decided to cancel the stay-away.
