Telkom has marked World AIDS Day today by announcing it is rolling out antiretroviral treatment for its HIV-infected employees.
Telkom`s Thuso programme includes voluntary counselling, testing and treatment.
The company`s HIV prevalence rate stands at 9.6% and is expected to peak at 11.4% in 2006. Telkom has allocated R8 million in the current financial year for the effective management of HIV and AIDS.
Recent reports from Statistics SA estimate that 3.83 million South Africans are infected, equating to 15.2% of the adult population. The Actuarial Society of SA estimates the total will be 5.17 million in 2005 and the Human Sciences Research Council estimates a total of 4.58 million in 2005.
