Telkom takes on crime

Johannesburg, 26 Aug 2004

Telkom has introduced a kids` anti-crime programme and a sexual offences court sponsorship as part of its social responsibility initiatives.

In a bid to help combat sexual offences in SA, Telkom CEO Sizwe Nxasana is 'adopting` a sexual offences court at Phuthaditjhaba in the Free State region of Qwaqwa.

Telkom says the sponsorship aims to help create a safe environment in which women and children can seek justice in the event of sexual offences committed against them.

Telkom notes that SA`s sexual offences statistics are alarming, and says the judicial system is struggling to process all the offenders. To alleviate the situation, the government has set up 51 specialised courts and plans to roll-out at least 15 courts a year.

These courts will also try to make the process as painless as possible for children who have been victims of sexual crimes by allowing them to testify via visual equipment and thus not having any more exposure to the offender.

In another programme, Telkom will partner with the South African Police Services to host a two-week programme at the Pretoria Show, to children about crime prevention and services.

The show, now under way at the Tshwane Events Centre, will feature Telkom`s Captain Crime Stop and a clown, who will outline the correct use of the toll-free 10111 emergency number.

They will also explain what constitutes an emergency and how youngsters can protect themselves in certain situations. Children visiting the Telkom stand at the show will also be encouraged to learn about communications and technology by interacting on the e*TelPal online system.
