Over the past few years Telkom has been continually upgrading its international Internet connectivity and is today well positioned to handle increases in bandwidth demands that may result from the WorldCom debacle in the US, says Rikus Matthyser, Executive Telkom Business Integration Services.
"During the next three months we are further increasing our international bandwidth by 155MB on the submarine cable with a fully redundant network between the UK and the US, offering the highest bandwidth capacity out of Africa," adds Matthyser.
Commenting on the WorldCom issue and Telkom`s Internet services, Matthyser says the problems encountered by WorldCom are of increasing concern to large Internet users who fear they may be affected.
He points out that Telkom is not buying any service from WorldCom and that Telkom`s SAIX (South African Internet Exchange) handles all Telkom`s and its many customers` Internet access routing out of SA. Telkom currently has large "data pipes" to the UK with BT and AT&T in the US, as well as satellite links with the US and Canada.
He adds that Telkom also has local peering links in place with IS, UUNet and MTN Network solutions and international peering links with Cable and Wireless, BT, Teleglobe and AT&T.
"It is interesting to note that during the past year large users of communication services are placing their business with companies that have a broad base in the industry and operate their own large networks," Matthyser said.
"Telcos are their obvious choice as they are able to provide end-to-end services," he added.
Telkom Internet, Telkom`s ISP, offers a full range of Internet dial-up services, connectivity to the World Wide Web, File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and Dedicated Internet Access* in incremental multiples of 4kb/s up to 32MB/s.
"Telkom Internet can assist organisations to manage their risk on the Internet by providing e-mail hosting services, Web hosting services, private label services and other Internet related services," Matthyser concludes.
* A dedicated Internet Service (DIS) is always-on Internet connectivity that is used by business, corporate and government customers who require access for their day-to-day business operations. Connectivity via a dedicated leased line (Diginet) provides customers with 24-hour access.
