TELLIN intelligent network launched by Telkom Kenya

On Oct 25th 2001, a grand ceremony was held for the launch of Kenya National Intelligent Network by Telkom Kenya Ltd in Nairobi, the capital and largest city of Kenya. The celebration was live broadcast to the whole country by Kenya National Television Station.

As many as 300 officials including Hon. Musalia Mudavadi, Minister for Transport and Communications, Mr. Wilson Ndolo Ayah, Chairman of Telkom Kenya Board of Directors, Mr. Cheserem, Managing Director of Telkom Kenya, were present at the ceremony. They showed great interest in the operational capacity and customized services provided by the network. The TELLIN(r) intelligent network is the first fixed intelligent network of its kind in East Africa.

Meanwhile the technical experts from Telkom Kenya showed great confidence that Kenya National Intelligent Network would run in a reliable and efficient way guaranteed by TKL`s engineers trained by Huawei.

For this tender, Huawei provided a whole set of TELLIN(r) intelligent network system covering the whole country of Kenya including Nairobi, Mombasa, Eldoret, Nyeri, and other areas. The contract is valued at more than US$ 4 million. The project allows TKL to deliver value-added services for its customers in Kenya. The services include prepaid card service (PPS), free phone (FPH), premium rate (PRM), virtual private network (VPN), universal personal number (UPT), and more. The IN project currently accommodates a total of 1,000,000 PPS subscribers.

Among the 12 leading suppliers of telecom equipment from North America, Europe and Asia taking part in the tender, Huawei became the final winner to build out a national backbone intelligent network for Telkom Kenya.

Working together with TKL, Huawei has established Kenya`s national standard of intelligent network. In addition, Huawei has helped TKL to train its telecom engineers for efficient management and maintenance of this first fixed intelligent network in East Africa.

Further expansion of this Kenya IN project is underway, according to Telkom Kenya officials.
