Ten-gigabit switches perfect for Africa's SME

Today, the SME market is risk-averse and price-sensitive. Entrepreneurs and small to medium business (SME) owners that sit within this realm are not inclined to be swept along by market hype or pulled into the terrors of 'big data' without having a thorough understanding as to what these terms mean for their bottom line.

However, data is out there and the speed at which it is increasing in volume means there will always be a need for cost-effective networking solutions. Netgear has its metaphorical finger on the pulse, as it has just swooped into the market with an offering that's quite extraordinary.

"This is the first affordable 10-gigabit switch aimed at the SME, and the market is more than ready for it," says Mark Campbell, general manager for Netgear at Tarsus Technologies. "Many smaller businesses with large data volumes that sit within the gigabyte range will appreciate the fact that this is not only versatile and fast, but easy on the bottom line. The solutions are aggressively priced to suit the budgets of entry-level organisations without them having to compromise on quality."

Interestingly, Crehan Research recently released a report stating that 10-gigabit Ethernet has had strong growth, with double-digit increases across both revenue and shipments in the second quarter of 2013. Seamus Crehan, president of Crehan Research, said: "The demand for high-speed server networking rebounded strongly," and that this had "propelled the 10Gb market to new highs".

This demand is not limited to the enterprise; many SMEs today are finding themselves handling growing volumes of data on a daily basis. The Netgear 10-gigabit system has been designed to meet these needs head on. These copper-based switching solutions cover three categories: Unmanaged Plus, Smart and Fully Managed, each with a robust feature list and spot-on price point.

Netgear switches make use of existing copper cabling and RJ45 Ethernet jacks in order to provide businesses with speedy and expansive network connectivity within the 10-gigabit range.

"For the South African market there are unique and legacy connectivity and networking issues that can cost the business a lot of money with limited or patchy results," continues Campbell. "What Netgear has done is to create a backwards compatible solution that can manage varied speeds and legacy systems and still deliver a superb networking solution to a cash-strapped market."

One of the advantages of the switches is that the business isn't forced to undergo an expensive equipment upgrade in order to match their growing data demands. The devices deliver an almost plug-and-play level of implementation and can be adapted to suit a variety of environments, budgets and requirements.

"The price point is certainly a feature that stands out at first glance," says Campbell. "However, there is also the fact that you can find these with eight, 12 or 24 ports, plus they are a seamless networking option for the sub-500 user organisation." Source 1:
