The Department of Communications has awarded a tender to a consortium of consultants to undertake an inventory of databases to determine which are critical for the country.
The consortium is made up of KPMG, GOBODO, ICT Works and Sizwe NtsalubaVSP. The value of the contract was not disclosed.
According to the department, the Electronic Communications and Transaction Act makes provision for the minister of communications to declare certain databases as critical databases.
This information gathering will assist the minister to put in place regulations with respect to the development, maintenance, validity, integrity and security of these databases and related systems.
The inventory will help the department to review progress and compliance on an ongoing basis and refine policy, legislative and regulatory requirements where appropriate. It will also help ensure that databases and data that could negatively impact on companies and citizens are developed, maintained and secured to meet appropriate standards.
