Teradata, the world's largest company focused on business data warehousing, has announced a new video meant to help companies understand how to come to grips with “big data”.
Big data is stores of data so large that ordinary software tools can't manage them. Teradata says data volumes are surging by the exabyte every day.
The company is represented in South Africa by Bytes Systems Integration, part of Bytes Technology Group, and wholly-owned by JSE-listed Altron.
In new videos, Scott Gnau, president of Teradata Labs, and Mayank Bawa, VP of development, Teradata Aster, explain the importance of big data, and how companies can - starting immediately - plan and deploy a big data analytics environment to start creating richer, detailed insight.
“We're getting lots of interest from the market about how companies can extend their data warehouses from the enterprise data they now have, into the new world of multi-structured data from new sources, to get a better understanding of the business,” Gnau says. “These technologies enable cost take-out, improve manageability, and improve the deployability of data analysis.”
“We saw the need for new analytic capabilities coming years ago. Aster was the first and only platform that brought together the combination of SQL and MapReduce to the market so our customers could use familiar SQL tools for big data, and simultaneously have the flexibility of MapReduce to do interesting analytics for the business,” says Bawa. “We integrated the platform for standard delivery tools, made it accessible for a broader variety of users, and received a patent for it.”
“Today, 80% of all enterprise data is in a multi-structured format - not a standard, relational format - making it hard to analyse, understand and evaluate. This data comes from many sources, including interactions your customers are having for service and support, and from social media sites - things your customers are saying online. It comes from your own company Web site - and sensors as well as telematics,” says Stephanie McReynolds, director of product marketing for Teradata Aster.
“Companies that have not yet established a big data strategy and execution plan should act quickly to create a competitive advantage.”
Teradata recently announced a definitive agreement to acquire Aster Data Systems, a company focused on finding useful information in big data, which can include both structured database information and unstructured data, such as videos, social media material and more.
“Big data is one of the most important drivers in the business intelligence market today,” says Hendrik Blignaut, Teradata executive at Bytes Systems Integration. “This educational video will help customers to get a grip on the issue.
“It is widely reported that the volume of data in use by companies of substance is growing exponentially,” adds Blignaut. “The ability to interrogate such large data sets is of great importance for companies, for which gaining insight into their operations, and the appropriate data warehousing technology, is key here, as most business intelligence tools will struggle.”
