Tesco intros scan-as-you-shop

Tesco is planning to move payment on from the self-service checkout with a handheld device that allows consumers to scan items as they shop, says Marketing Magazine.

The device has been trialled for six months in a store in Romford, UK. In the supermarket's latest results, Tesco said it plans to introduce the device "to many more stores from next year".

The device allows people to keep track of the cost of their shop as they progress through the store. Fruit and vegetables can be weighed at points throughout the shop and to pay for their produce, customers take the device to a payment point, says the company.

Dell debuts self-service portal

Dell has taken a step forward in its efforts to deliver a unified server platform with the release of a self-service portal and an update to systems management software the company recently added via its acquisition of Scalent, states CTO Edge.

In addition, Dell plans to release management tools to help IT organisations dynamically manage capacity and more easily identify system dependencies.

According to Matt Baker, director for enterprise strategy for Dell, the self-service portal is a key element of Dell's Virtual Integrated System architecture because it allows IT administrators to set up a cloud computing service that lets end-users directly request IT resources with little to no intervention from the internal IT department.

University gets self-service HR app

A workforce management system initially begun by Cleveland State University in 2006 has been declared fully implemented by the institution, writes Campus Technology.

The 16 000-student university is using the Kronos time and attendance program. The application, called MyTime, is an on-premise program that integrates with the campus' existing system and provides for employee self-service in a number of areas.

In choosing Kronos, Cleveland State sought to replace a paper-based system and in the process control labour costs, minimise risk, and automate and streamline timekeeping operations, which were complex.
