EDS has announced a $150 million contract extension from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission to provide claims administration services for the state`s Medicaid programme.
EDS, through its Austin, Texas-based National Heritage Insurance Company (NHIC) subsidiary, annually processes some 34 million Medicaid claims for the state. The contract extension runs through 29 February 2004, with a six-month option period available to the state.
Under terms of the contract extension, NHIC will continue to support Texas` acute-care, long-term care, family-planning and child healthcare Medicaid programmes. NHIC provides a range of services, including claims processing, provider outreach and education, call centre support, hospital audits and IT management. NHIC has served as claims administrator for the state`s Medicaid programme - the third largest in the country with some 2.2 million recipients - since 1977.
In Texas` 2002 fiscal year, ended 31 August, NHIC processed 34 million claims, with an average processing time of just over two days. Earlier this year, the new claims administration system implemented by NHIC, called Compass 21, received federal certification. The certification is a standard requirement for states to receive federal funding to support their Medicaid information systems.
