Prices of thin film transistor displays are sagging in global markets, says Tarsus Technologies` Sarah le Roux, business manager for Samsung monitors at the distributor. Tarsus is the sole distributor for Samsung monitors in South Africa.
According to le Roux, falling prices are due to a number of factors, including an oversupply of screens created by the launch of mass production by additional Taiwanese manufacturers, as well as increase in production facilities by market heavyweights such as Samsung and LG Electronics. "As the market matures, there is increased competition and development costs are recouped, allowing the price of products to decline quite significantly," notes le Roux.
She says a similar case of dropping prices has been observed for notebook screen components. Le Roux says that prices can be expected to continue to drop, potentially putting TFT screens within the grasp of many users still discouraged by the price of a TFT compared to traditional CRT monitors. "However, with the declining value of the Rand, South African buyers may not see such a significant decrease," she concludes.
