The 14-inch monitor is here to stay, says SDD

Johannesburg, 06 Apr 2001

Despite widespread speculation that the 14-inch monitor was going the way of the hula-hoop, vinyl records and beehive hairdos, the diminutive screen appears to be as popular as ever. That's according to Quintus Theron, product manager for Philips monitors at SDD.

"SDD has seen a continued increase in volumes of 14-inch monitors that defies what was widely rumoured to be its demise late last year," he declares. According to Theron, the reasons for the sustained popularity of the display are that it simply makes good economic sense, and a 14-inch monitor is perfectly suitable for most applications.

"Unless there is a business reason for a larger monitor, we are finding a trend for corporates to shy away from more larger, more expensive displays," he says.

Theron reveals that for every ten 14-inch monitors sold in this country, five 15-inch and four 17-inch models are purchased. "This clearly indicates that the 15-inch and 17-inch - deemed to be the nemesis of the 14-inch - have not captured as much of the market as was initially expected," he says.

Theron believes TFT screens will remain the preserve of visible corporate environment for the foreseeable future until prices drop to those of regular CRT displays.

Philips is one of the world's leading manufacturers of television, CRT and TFT displays. SDD is the largest distributor of the company's CRT and TFT monitors in South Africa.
