The best in mobile computing showcased

Johannesburg, 05 Mar 1998

In what is believed to be a `first` in the South African IT industry, resellers and end-users around the country will be able to view and compare the very best in mobile technology under one roof at the SDD Technology Showcase. Organised by Siltek Distribution Dynamics (SDD), SA`s largest broad-based distributor, the Showcase will features the latest mobile computing devices from Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Philips as well as connectivity solutions from Xircom. SDD managing director Rob Matthews says SDD`s suppliers have been keen to join the Technology Showcase as it enables them to reach an audience in areas not usually covered by major technology shows. "This is probably the first time the channel and end-users in Pietersburg, Nelspruit, Bloemfontein, East London and Port Elizabeth will have an opportunity to attend a show highlighting `best of breed` products from the world`s leading vendors," he says. The Showcase features all aspects of computer technology from servers and desktops to printers, products and consumables, but there will be a special emphasis on mobile computing. Among the many mobile models on display, are: * Hewlett Packard`s OmniBook 3000, which offers a choice of 266-, 233- or 200-MHz Intel Pentium processors with MMX technology; 16 or 32 MB of standard RAM, expandable to 144 MB; hard disk capacity up to 4Gb; and lithium-ion battery technology with a dual-battery option so you can keep working for up to five hours at a stretch; 128 bit video graphic accelerator controller; instant on/off switch and a 13,3" viewable screen.* IBM`s acclaimed ThinkPad range, including the ThinkPad 380ED, 560 and 233-Mhz Intel Pentium processor with MMX 770 models, which deliver a level of power once thought possible only in notebooks nearly twice their weight; and * The Philips 17cm Velo 1, a handheld `virtual desktop` unit which doesn`t look like other handheld PCs and is the only handheld with a complete set of integrated communications built in, ready to run, with no cards attached. It also runs Windows CE along with `pocket` versions of Microsoft applications. Visitors to the SDD Technology Showcase will also be able to see Xircom`s CreditCard Ethernet 10/100+ Modem 56 with GSM capability, a three-in-one connectivity solution which wowed visitors at the COMDEX/Fall 97 exhibition in Las Vegas and captured the Xynetix Design Challenge "Best in Show" award. The SDD Technology Showcase kicked off in Bloemfontein on March 4 and moves through Port Elizabeth, East London, Midrand, Durban, Nelspruit, and Pietersburg before ending in Cape Town on April 23.
