D-Link, supplier of networking products, has announced the availability of its DES-5200 series 10/100Mbps switches with its high-performance chassis designed for departmental connection.
According to D-Link country manager, Bertus Moller, these switches offer high density of auto-sensing 10/100Mbps ports, plus fiber-optic ports for reliable server connection, and advanced functions for network management.
"D-Link once again shows itself an exponent of the art of flexibility. With 1000Mbps Gigabit options, the switches can also connect to high-speed enterprise or campus backbones linking departments together," says Moller.
The DES-5200 series switches are available in three chassis configurations:
. 24 10/100Mbps ports,
. 16 100Mbps fiber ports, and
. mixed twisted-pair/fiber ports (12 10/100Mbps ports plus 8 100Mbps fiber ports.)
In addition, optional modules with two 100Mbps fiber ports or two 10/100Mbps ports can also be installed to increase the port density. All ports support NWay auto-negotiate full/half duplex standard.
Each switch provides two expansion slots for installation of up to two Gigabit modules and each Gigabit module provides one 1000BASE-SX fiber port transmitting data at 1000Mbps. With full/half duplex support and flow control against data loss, these ports are capable of handling very large amounts of data in a secure switch topology. The Gigabit ports allow the switch to connect to a fiber backbone that links departments together, or to a high-power server providing simultaneous access to multiple clients.
The switches support multiple port trunks. Up to 8 ports can be combined into a trunk providing load-sharing aggregate-bandwidth running at maximum 1600Mbps in full-duplex. Users can use port trunks to provide high-speed server-to-switch connection or switch-to-switch cascading. For sites equipped with only Fast Ethernet hardware, port trunking uses currently available technology to attain near Gigabit speed on multiple connection.
"The switches support multiple port-based VLANs to extend the broadcast domain, segment network traffic and improve performance and manageability. This allows add-ons, moves and changes related to workgroups and servers to be easily carried out. Security is also enhanced," explains Moller.
The switches can be managed in-band from an SNMP management station, and on a LAN via an Internet web browser. SNMP and other MIBs are built-in, and the in-band station runs D-Link`s versatile D-View SNMP Network Management Program. Web-based management program is built into the switches. RMON monitoring is through built-in RMON MIBs and standard VLAN MIBs. Bootp, Telnet support and out-of-band console programs are provided.
