The future of photography is now

Johannesburg, 05 Mar 1998

The future of photography - and the strides taken in all aspects of the photography revolution - will be among the highlights of the SDD Technology Showcase, the most diverse IT show of its kind ever staged throughout South Africa. Organised by the Siltek Distribution Dynamics (SDD), the country`s largest broad-based technology distributor, the Showcase will feature new technologies and `best-of-breed` products in the printing, scanning and digital photography arena, including Epson and Hewlett Packard. Visitors to the Showcase will be able to find out more about Epson`s integrated solution which enables home, business and professional users to capture, manipulate and print exceptional, high quality, photographic images while HP`s offering, the HP PhotoSmart PC photography system, said to be the first PC photography system designed for the SoHo (small office home office) market. "For the first time, anyone with an interest in photography and with a few basic computer skills, can take over the photo printing process with a convenient, easy to use, affordable system," says Lizette McIntosh, Epson general manager at SDD. Before you can output colour photoprints, colour images must be captured in a digital format. This means either using a digital camera to import pictures directly to the computer, or converting images taken on conventional film using a colour scanner. Then, a suitable colour printer is required to deliver output which rivals that of conventional photographic printing processes. The Epson Photo Studio meets all these requirements, by incorporating a combination of advanced, yet affordable products embracing the whole photo printing process from scanning 35mm film or transparencies to printing and producing results which are virtually indistinguishable from conventional photographic prints. These include the Epson FilmScan 200, a low cost 35mm scanner; the Epson Stylus Photo, a superb photo printer; and the Epson PhotoPC 500 digital camera. Similarly, the new HP PhotoSmart PC photography system, also includes a photo printer, photo scanner, digital camera and photographic papers. It allows users to take original digital photos or scan in existing photos, slides or negatives and then edit or reproduce those photos at home. "The system offers a high level of flexibility and creativity, enabling users to make professional-looking prints, reprints and enlargements of photos that can be incorporated into personalised greeting cards, calendars and postcards," says HP marketing manager at SDD, Christine Verster. "PC photography is set to change the way people take, enhance and develop their photos. Photography will never the be same again." To find out more about digital and PC photography, resellers and end-users can visit the SDD Technology Showcase which kicked off in Bloemfontein on March 4 and moves through Port Elizabeth, East London, Midrand, Durban, Nelspruit, and Pietersburg before ending in Cape Town on April 23.
