The high speed option: Duxbury delivers gigabit to the laptop

Johannesburg, 23 Nov 2004

Notebook users have been given a high-speed boost with the release of the industry`s first Gigabit cardbus adaptor by Duxbury Networking on behalf of its principal, Netgear.

The move, according to Duxbury`s chief technology officer, Graham Vorster, has been driven by a growing demand in the business and consumer sectors for faster data transfer capabilities.

The new Netgear GA511 Gigabit PC Card provides speeds up to 10 times faster than Fast Ethernet and 100 times faster than 802.11b wireless technologies.

"Gigabit switches are becoming increasingly affordable and, as a result, home and business users are rapidly migrating to the performance-enhancing speeds that Gigabit technology provides," says Vorster.

"Until now, Gigabit adapters have only been available for desktop systems. With many companies standardising on notebook computers, Gigabit speeds allow users to work with large CAD, video, or database files on their laptops as normal.

"Netgear`s new offering is designed to quickly and easily connect laptop users to other networked computers, printers, routers, network storage and the Internet at speeds of up to 1000 Mbps," he explains.

Fully backward compatible with 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps Ethernet products, the GA511 incorporates Netgear`s Smart Wizard Install Assistant for easy five-click installation and features 10/100/1000 Mbps auto-sensing speeds eliminating any need for manual switching.
