The director general`s office of the Department of Communications has paid tribute to the late Mmathapelo Lengosane, head of broadcasting development at the department, who died last week, aged 40, after a short illness.

Lengosane joined the department in 1997 in the gender division dealing with issues related to the disabled, women and the youth.

She then moved to the multimedia unit, where she was a senior manager and later joined the broadcasting and division where she specifically dealt with broadcasting-related projects.

Within the broadcasting division she spearheaded a number of projects that were internationally renowned. These include the of TV and radio from analogue to digital systems.

The chief director in the director general`s office, Brenda Ntombela, says the news of her death shocked the whole department.

"She never showed any sign of being sick, as she was always energetic, ready to contribute and give information to those who needed it," says Ntombela.

"Personally, I knew Lengosane as someone who was always there to help if you needed any assistance," she adds.

"The last time I spoke to her she was in hospital and surprisingly she was working on a document. She called me while in hospital to reassure me that the director general would get the document as she was putting final touches to it," says Ntombela.

The department will always remember Lengosane as "a workaholic, passionate about her work, always ready to work extra hours," says Ntombela.

She is survived by her husband, Tumelo, and son, Kabelo.
