The month of May saw SA clinch a couple of global awards, while mobile technology and smartphones continued to advance at a rapid rate.

Local marketing agency Native outlines some of last month's mobile developments that made headlines both locally and worldwide.

1.For the first time in history, smartphones outsold feature phones.

2. Local mobile shopping app PriceCheck won the BlackBerry App of the Year award, having gone up against some 100 000 apps from around the world.

3. BlackBerry announced it is opening up its iconic BlackBerry Messenger to Android and iOS platforms.

4. Samsung started testing 5G mobile technology, claiming a major breakthrough that could see it launched by 2020.

5. Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed the tech giant's long-awaited iOS at the company's developer conference.

6. SA's second mobile operator MTN was ranked top brand in the Millward-Brown Brandz Top 100 Global Brands 2013. MTN was the only African brand to feature in this year's survey.
