Dimension Data Holdings plc ("Dimension Data") says its 51% Asian subsidiary, Datacraft Asia Ltd ("Datacraft"), the networking systems integrator and e-business enabler, has won a contract worth over US$4 million to build a broadband IP network for the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China.
The project lays the foundation for Xinjiang Post and Telecommunications Authority (PTA) to start offering high-speed Internet access services to its customers in China`s largest province.
The latest in a continuing series of China contracts won by Datacraft, the Xinjiang PTA contract covers the expansion of the existing, region-wide IP backbone network and the installation of metropolitan area networks (MANs) in several cities. The new network will remove bandwidth bottlenecks on the existing region-wide IP backbone, providing a high-speed digital highway connecting the new city-wide MANs in Xinjiang with the rest of China and the global Internet. Site of the fabled Silk Road that was the main trading artery between East and West, Xinjiang is over four times the size of Japan.
"The Xinjiang contract is an excellent example of the tremendous Internet growth in China as compared with traditional dedicated data networks," said Raymond So, Datacraft`s Greater China managing director. "Although Internet usage is still at an early stage in Xinjiang, the implementation of a broadband network will play a significant role in supporting the economic development of Xinjiang which is a focus of the Chinese government`s `Go West` policy," says So.
"Having provided excellent services to numerous telecommunications service providers throughout China for over 10 years, Datacraft had an intimate understanding of our business and technical requirements," said Jing Ming, Director of Data Communication Bureau, Xinjiang PTA. "The company`s long-standing track record and close vendor relationships are also key factors in winning the contract, because a large network such as this is essentially an investment in reliability and proven expertise," he added.
The new project is the latest in a continuing series of China contracts won by Datacraft, which is currently installing a US$12 million broadband IP backbone and MAN infrastructure in Anhui province.
