The Sims Social already has over 4.6 million daily active users, just a week after Electronic Arts (EA) released the popular game on Facebook.

According to App Data, a traffic service, the new game ranks as number 10 overall in terms of daily active users for apps, and number six overall for games. In terms of monthly active users, The Sims Social has over 10.6 million.

The most played game on Facebook is Zynga's Cityville, with close to 14 million daily active users. According to the statistics on App Data, however, Cityville appears to be losing the interest of its users, and is down from its 21.5 million all-time high, and losing up to 400 000 users per week.

EA has reportedly been eyeing social gaming for some time, following the huge success of Zynga and Rovio (Angry Birds) in that space. The game developer also recently bought PopCap Games, the maker of popular titles such as Peggle and Plants vs Zombies.

The Sims is a hugely popular life-simulation PC-based game that first entered the scene in 2000. The game has undergone a number of revamps and updates and has sold over 140 million copies worldwide.

The Sims Social made its debut out of beta last week, and is a collaboration between EA and Playfish. While the game is a stripped down version of the original, the key difference is that the Sims in the game exist in a virtual world populated by one's Facebook friends.

The game allows users to create an avatar, which they then control in what is essentially a virtual town. Just as in the original game, they must manage the needs of the Sim by feeding them, letting them sleep and helping them interact with other Sims.

At the rate the game is currently growing, it is expected to overtake Cityville as the most played Facebook game next month.
