SITA under the guidance of the Department of Public Service and Administration, is the Information Technology (IT), Information Systems (IS) and related service provider to, or on behalf of, participating departments and acts as an agent of the South African Government with regard to these services.
SITA has a seat on the state tender board and provides transversal financial management for public sector IT purchases and procurement. In this role it focuses on ensuring the interoperability and the standardisation of information systems across the Government infrastructure. In time, it will eradicate duplication across all departments, guarantee the integrity and security of data and reduce paperwork through a fully electronic procurement process over a secure Internet system. Open and fair tender and quotation processes will be followed through the Tender Board and cross-functional evaluation teams to curb fraud and enable Government to focus on their core functions. It is envisaged that umbrella-term contracts for Government IT requirements will be set up accordingly.
Over the next three years it will deliver a watertight security platform for public sector IT departments. As the procurement agency for State IT, SITA will strive to achieve economies of scale across the entire spectrum of Government IT needs and speedy delivery. SITA aims to improve the return on investment on Government IT expenditure whilst improving quality services.
With the government playing an increasingly pivotal role in shaping policy for South Africa, the SADC countries and in Africa - SITA will fill an important niche in the IT sector.
