Just when console gamers thought they were going to get a fun third-person Wild West title, developer Capcom decided to drop the curtain on Red Dead Revolver. Thankfully, Rockstar Games decided to take over the project and transform the game into an adrenalin-charged, non-stop action offering of note.
The story begins with a gunfight in which a young boy (Red) loses his family to a group of varmints. Years later he comes back, seeking vengeance on those who took away his family and left him for dead. This classic Western tale sets a perfect scenario for the gun-slinging action.
Each stage has a different task for the gamer to complete. These include basic things like destroying a bridge or defending the helpless, to something more complex like defending a train from a group of bandits and jumping onto a train from a horse.
The controls are different to most other third-person titles and do take time getting used to. Thinking along the lines of Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City certainly helps when attacking the concept of Red Dead Revolver.
What would an action game be without bullet-time? Referred to as Dead Eye, this Matrix-like sequence is a handy tool when involved in a one-on-one shootout or even attacked by a smaller group. It is also implemented in the duels where it provides you with enough time to pull, aim and fire.
Unlocking new features is based on your performance. Even after you have completed the game, a number of new objectives become available. This includes new characters that can be selected in the multiplayer battle mode.
Multiplayer is always fun. However, on the PlayStation 2 this only comes into play when an actual network game is taking place. Otherwise you are forced to play a split-screen battle that quickly gets tiresome. Red Dead Revolver`s real strength lies within its story mode.
The graphics in Red Dead Revolver will capture many gamers` imagination by creating a film-like atmosphere with classic red sunsets, dusty ghost towns and big-chinned outlaws.
Nicely done visuals can also be seen in gun fire effects and explosions which are perfectly complemented by well sampled audio effects and a soundtrack that gives you the full feel for the game.
So watch out for this one, you will be blown away!
