Jos Pols, MD and founder of TimBukOne, has been selected by the System Administration, , and Institute (SANS) to present its Management 512: Security Leadership Essentials in Bryanston from 14 to 18July.

According to Steve Peterson, director of mentor programmes, SANS was founded in 1989 as a cooperative research and organisation. "It is the most trusted and by far the largest source for information security training and certification in the world," he says.

Peterson adds that although SANS has offered training courses in South Africa before, "this is the first time Management 512 will be offered and the first time we have worked with TimBukOne".

Says Pols: "In my opinion, the hottest area in information technology is in fact information security. The seemingly endless stories on the news about information breaches, data losses, and so forth show that information security is not a technical problem, but a management problem."

According to Peterson: "Information security and its threats have no borders. This is a unique opportunity for South African security professionals to experience a live SANS five-day training event in their local market."

The Management 512 course is limited to only 10 students, says Peterson, but he anticipates it will be sold out quickly. "Management 512 is a cornerstone SANS course. Authored by SANS CEO Stephen Northcutt, it often sells out at SANS conference events," he says.

According to Pols, the course is aimed at senior and advancing managers, and not computer techies. "It is designed to empower managers who want to get up to speed fast on information security issues and terminology, to help them get the big picture and a broader perspective in information security," he says.

He says that the course will cover, among others, network fundamentals and applications, hardware architecture, information assurance foundations, computer security policies, contingency and continuity planning, business impact analysis, incident handling, Web security, as well as offensive and defensive information warfare.

"Jos Pols of TimBukOne is one of a select few individuals in the world who is qualified to teach this course for SANS. At the heart of SANS are the many security practitioners in government agencies, corporations, and universities around the world who invest hundreds of hours each year in research and teaching to help the entire information security community," Peterson concludes.
