TippingPoint enables end-to-end enterprise protection with availability of UnityOne-50

Johannesburg, 31 May 2004

SecureData, a member of the JSE-listed ERP.com Group, and the African distributor for TippingPoint Technologies, today announced the availability of UnityOne-50, which will enable remote branch offices and smaller enterprises to benefit from the most advanced in-line intrusion prevention capabilities.

The 50Mb UnityOne-50 is the latest addition to the TippingPoint product line, bringing the cost of best-of-breed intrusion prevention down significantly. The UnityOne-50 enables branch-office for larger enterprises and targets the market for smaller offices wanting a level of protection recently described by The NSS Group test labs as "impeccable, with 100% of all attacks being detected and blocked under all load conditions".

TippingPoint's award-winning Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS), coupled with TippingPoint's best-of-breed and management software, enables end-to-end protection of the entire enterprise and helps to ensure business continuity in the face of increasing network and application misuse and abuse. TippingPoint's broad IPS product line includes six UnityOne devices capable of handling a variety of network speeds. With this latest product addition, TippingPoint enables enterprises to easily enforce an end-to-end enterprise security policy for the first time.

The recently conducted UK DTI Information Security Breaches Survey 2004 shows a marked increase in attacks on UK businesses - up from 44% of businesses suffering damages in 2002 to 68% in 2004, with 91% of larger organisations reporting malicious attacks in the last year. The report suggests that average cost of these attacks, including loss of business, was between lb7 000 and lb14 000, while the cost for larger organisations was between lb65 000 and lb190 000. The business challenge is more concerning when coupled with statistics from organisations such as CERT that show 60% annual growth in the number of security incidents during 2003.

"We're excited to round out our product line and believe it has particular relevance to the European and African markets," commented TippingPoint's Chief Executive Officer Kip McClanahan. "These recent reports illustrate that proactive network protection should be viewed as a solid business investment in Europe as well as globally. Compared to the costs of post-attack clean up, TippingPoint's UnityOne Intrusion Prevention Systems represent a great value for enterprises of all sizes."

The UnityOne-50 enables smaller offices to reap the benefits of advanced intrusion prevention with the same functionality as all products in the range. The UnityOnc-50 unit has two Ethernet ports protecting one network segment; and due to customer demand, TippingPoint will also add a 5Gb product, the UnityOne-5000, to its product line later this year. It will be the highest performing product on the market.

Jeff Wilson, Principal Analyst of VPNs and Security at Infonetics Research, sees an even greats market potential: "The UnityOne-50 is an excellent solution for small enterprises and branch offices, bringing them state-of-the-art IPS features at a greatly reduced cost. Now that most offices are directly connected to the Internet, industrial strength network security is a requirement everywhere. At the other end of the scale, TippingPoint's UnityOne-5000 5Gb product due for release later this year is eagerly awaited by service providers, large corporations and data centres. The market potential is huge."

UnityOne Intrusion Prevention Systems inspect traffic through Layer 7 and block malicious traffic utilising a combination of complex algorithms, vulnerability-based virtual software patches, and statistical anomaly filters to stop denial of service attacks and zero-day exploits. All UnityOne devices can be automatically updated with the latest vulnerability-based Virtual Software Patches through the Digital Vaccine service. UnityOne traffic normalisation enforces protocol compliance and reclaims wasted bandwidth, delivering not just a safer network but also better performance under normal conditions.

UnityOne's Application Protection capabilities provide fast, accurate, reliable protection from internal and external cyber attacks. Through its Infrastructure Protection capabilities, UnityOne protects routers, switches, DNS and other critical infrastructure from targeted attacks and traffic anomalies. UnityOne Performance Protection capabilities enable customers to throttle non-mission critical applications that hijack valuable bandwidth and IT resources, thereby aligning network resources and business-critical application performance.
