Tiscali World Online offers critical content, security solution

Johannesburg, 02 Dec 2002

Tiscali World Online is reselling and supporting New Zealand-based Marshal Software`s MailMarshal SMTP.

MailMarshal SMTP is a gateway e-mail content and security tool that looks for malicious code or prohibited content in e-mail messages, attachments and embedded content.

"We expect that products such as MailMarshal will see increasing deployment in the local market. Research firm IDC expects that the market for security and content management will grow to around $4.3 billion by 2005. Anti-virus will form the bulk of this growth, while e-mail scanning will account for $620 million at a CAGR of 47%, according to the research organisation," says Graeme Slogrove, new product research executive at Tiscali World Online.

The Web front-end allows users to access the application from a centralised server across the Web, takes advantage of economies of scale and enables centralised management.

"The Web GUI has allowed us to bring a new pricing model and distribution structure to customers," says Slogrove. "Customers can now pay for the product monthly on a per user basis and the structure of individual deals can be changed from one month to the next."

Many businesses use policies governing the acceptable use of e-mail, but lack the capacity to enforce them. MailMarshal offers filtering technology and flexible management controls to provide monitoring and enforcement.

Businesses can avert confidential information and intellectual property losses, shield themselves against defamation and embarrassment, stop the spread of inappropriate material in the workplace, restore employee productivity, eliminate excessive non-business bandwidth consumption to enhance network performance, and curtail the distribution of unauthorised or pirated software.

"Only pre-approved content is permitted to pass into or out of the organisation, while objectionable or infected content is isolated and addressed according to company guidelines," says Slogrove.

Security features that MailMarshal provides include:

* Blocks viruses, malicious code, virus hoaxes, chain letters and spam;
* Controls the ability to send and receive specified file types;
* Detects keywords and phrases using advanced lexical analysis;
* Stops unauthorised relay attempts; and
* Provides detailed e-mail activity and security reports.

Beyond its range of content security features, MailMarshal provides users with an assortment of other e-mail enhancements, administrative advantages and cost reduction capabilities, including:

* Automation of business processes based on e-mail content;
* Return on investment is ensured by reducing the costs associated with excessive bandwidth use, spam, virus infections and removal, and lost productivity; and
* Total cost of ownership is minimal with the interface, diagnostic facilities, delegated administration, remote policy editing and printable configurations, which lower administrative expenses.
