Tiscali World Online will host a series of breakfast presentations by business leadership author and consultant Tony Manning in August. Entitled "Discovering the essence of leadership", and based on his eponymous new book, it is expected that the sessions will draw sellout crowds, much like his "Making sense of strategy" sessions, hosted by Tiscali World Online last year.
"The question of leadership affects both the private and corporate sector today," says Graeme Victor, Tiscali World Online MD. "We are taking the opportunity to offer a value-added service to our subscribers and to give the South African public the opportunity to learn more about this important issue and how it affects our country. Manning will focus on the practicalities of leadership, rather than the numerous theories that abound."
The presentations will begin with a discussion of leadership in the macro context, and will look at some of the major corporate disasters that have taken place in the last 18 months on a global scale. This includes analyses of the challenges threatening the world and the crisis of capitalism caused by the breakdown of trust in leadership. Manning will also consider the local context, and discuss the need to meet Nepad objectives as set out by the government.
"Addressing Nepad objectives will require capacity building and delivery," says Manning. "Leadership is crucial to the generation of wealth, and for the development of this country. With the number of people emigrating and the shortage of inspired leaders who can run businesses, we need to focus on providing practical ways for people to develop leadership skills."
Manning says the aim of the presentations is to provide people will helpful checklists and questionnaires focusing on what they need to do to be effective, so that they can return to the workplace and implement what they have learned. The presentations will cover the following:
* Is there any difference between management and leadership - and does it really matter?
* Are leaders born or made?
* What is the real role of a leader?
* Secrets of effective leadership.
* Using your communicating style to best effect.
* Developing tomorrow`s leaders.

Wednesday, 21 August - Cape Town, Mount Nelson Hotel
Thursday, 22 August - Port Elizabeth, Edward Protea Hotel
Friday, 23 August - Durban, Riverside Hotel
The presentations will run from 7.45am to 10.30am. Breakfast will be served. Costs are R300 per person or R2 700 per table of 10 for Tiscali World Online subscribers, and R320 per person or R2 880 per table of 10 for non-subscribers. Prices quoted include VAT.
