Toddler's death prompts warning

Vancouver communications officials say the death last week of a toddler in Calgary underlines the need for phone users to find out how their Internet providers handle 911 calls, states Vancouver Sun.

The boy's family placed a 911 call on an Internet-based phone service which was routed to a call centre in Ontario rather than to a Calgary 911 centre.

When the call was for undetermined reasons disconnected, the call centre contacted emergency services. However, the ambulance was dispatched to Mississauga rather than to the Calgary home where the toddler was having trouble breathing.

Adepto lowers rates

Adepto Telecom is lowering its rates for VOIP by 40%. This is the second price decrease this year by Adepto Telecom, according to 24-7PressRelease.com.

Adepto Telecom was already known as one of the providers of the most affordable VOIP rates for individual and institutional customers and the latest price decrease makes the company the provider of the lowest possible rates worldwide.

The price decrease will be applied to individual and institutional/corporate customer accounts as well as to resellers and other affiliates of the company.

Nu Teck wins contract

Communications integrator, Nu Teck, has won an IP telephony integration contract to upgrade Schindler Lifts with Panasonic VOIP systems, says ARNnet.

The deal sees it rolling out Panasonic's KX-TDA600AL IP-PBX solution configured with 160 extensions, 60 ISDN lines, voice mail/automated attendant with built-in unified messaging and call centre reporting software.

Nu Teck MD Jack Glazenburg said the contract, which was won in a competitive tender, ranks as one of its larger contracts.
