Toktumi available at no cost

Founded by VOIP guru Peter Sisson, Toktumi is a PC-based phone service that has been in private beta since 2006, until now, says PC Magazine.

Following a successful run, the company has just announced that the service is now open to the public.

The hosted peer-to-peer private branch exchange application, geared primarily toward small businesses, will be available for download at no cost and will include network-based features like conferencing, assigned phone IDs, inbound calling, voicemail, and auto-attendant forwarding.

Boosting VOIP security

According to Network World, LAN switching vendors are expected to roll-out voice product enhancements and partnerships at this week's VoiceCon Orlando conference.

Extreme Networks plans to unveil a software upgrade to its security appliances designed to better safeguard VOIP traffic.

Separately, HP ProCurve will join the newly formed Mitel Solutions Alliance for third-party interoperability.

VOIP, Internet usage increases

According to Lyn Maddock, deputy chairman of ACMA, despite reported customer satisfaction in Internet and VOIP services, improvements can be made to support the uptake of telecommunications technology in Australian homes and businesses, states CRN.

Citing survey results from ACMA's November 2007 research report, "Telecommunications Today", Maddock highlighted an increase in online shopping and banking by home users.

"The use of the Internet in the global economy is increasing; it's no longer just a tool of personal communication," she said.
