Huawei's consumer research and development team, together with other technology research firms, have said in five years' time, true 5G will be a reality globally.
These predictions show what will be available to industries and consumers by 2020. However, they assume infrastructure in the country or community will already be in place.
By 2020, nearly everything people use will emit an Internet connection. This includes the traditional smartphones, personal computers and WiFi hotspots, expanding to include all types of wearables and smart home connections, as people want to be connected wherever they go.
Predictions:
1. By 2020, the average end-user will be able to access Internet speeds of 10Gbps and true 5G will be reached. This speed is over a thousand times faster than the current average speeds experienced now.
2. There will be one millisecond latency, allowing industries to realise the potential of millisecond-level control. This will be used for real-time broadcasting, competitive computer gaming, and emergency services.
3. There will be over a million mobile and broadband connections per square kilometre. This will include all connections in smart homes, connected cars and wearables - the Internet of things. In all, there will be over 100 billion connections.
4. There will be a move from high-definition to virtual reality (VR). An example shown in the Huawei consumer exhibition hall in Shenzhen, China, of how VR will work in the home was of an exercise bike connected to a large wall-mounted screen showing a road scene. When the user peddles the bike, it starts moving virtually on the screen, and the steering bar turns the cycle left or right on the screen.
5. The mobile broadband market will be worth $2 trillion. All industries will need connections in order to thrive in the new intricately connected world. Within this market, there will be one billion smart metering connections, 1.5 billion connected car connections, and two billion industry manufacturing connections.
