Toyota shifts into top gear with terminal services integration

Johannesburg, 25 May 2004

Toyota South Africa has integrated a terminal services infrastructure, with server-based computing, to increase its productivity, communication capability and system management.

The country`s leading motor manufacturer acquired the services of national network integration and infrastructure management specialist Integr8 IT to assist with the project.

The relationship between Toyota SA and Integr8 IT started a few years ago and has evolved to the extent that there are now two full-time Integr8 IT representatives contracted to Toyota on the desktop side.

Dirk Valentin, IT Technical Manager at Toyota SA, says the company required a solution that would aid the process of clamping down on non-essential use of ICT infrastructure and ensure a cost-effective alternative to PC replacement on the company`s production lines.

"We called on Integr8 IT to set up a pilot site based on terminal server technology with integration into SAP. Management realised the benefits especially with regard to productivity, pricing, security and other core business issues," comments Valentin.

Integr8 IT engineer Jacques Watermeyer adds: "Toyota is generally moving towards Active Directory and this has brought up a great deal of opportunity in terms of security, less down time and total cost of ownership. Toyota remains in control of its backend, especially with SAP running on the terminal server."

"Our role is to provide ease of management to the customer as well as the flexibility going forward with new products, solutions, etc. Product development matches up to the growth in IT and it is our job to ensure the client secures the best possible hardware solutions to handle their needs. Running terminal server meant an upgrade on the server side of things, and less on the desktop," adds Watermeyer.

"This factor played an important role in our decision," Valentin concurs. "The time and cost involved in an upgrade is such that a centralised terminal server environment makes a great deal of business sense."
