Trade Me implements PacketShaper

Trade Me, a New Zealand e-commerce business, has accelerated and optimised the traffic between its New Zealand centres using Packeteer's PacketShaper solutions to more efficiently ensure business continuity, says FOX Business.

With support from Hewlett-Packard New Zealand, a Packeteer global solutions , Trade Me has deployed four PacketShaper 10000 WAN optimisation appliances.

Using a combination of intelligent application optimisation and acceleration, the Packeteer solution has reduced the load on Trade Me's Auckland-Wellington link by 60% to 70% and halved the time taken to run the daily backup of its primary site from seven hours to 3.5 hours.

BCI extends credential

The Business Continuity Institute (BCI) is to extend its business continuity credential beyond its 4 000 members in more than 85 countries to anyone who passes the organisation's certification exam, reports Computer Weekly.

The BCI has introduced the standalone credential as an alternative to full membership for anyone who wants to prove they have a good working knowledge and understanding of the basics of business continuity management.

The credential is mainly aimed at new entrants to the business continuity arena who have a knowledge and understanding of the topic, but lack the experience required for full BCI membership.

Hardware failure is top threat

SunGard Availability Services has published its second annual report on the major causes of business disruptions, states Continuity Central.

Analysis of SunGard's invocation logs has found that while hardware failures remained the biggest cause of customer invocations (disaster declarations), the proportion of flood-related invocations grew dramatically in 2007, up from 6% in 2006 to 12% in 2007.

Hardware failures accounted for 35% of invocations in 2007, down from 45% in 2006.
