Siemens Telecommunications and Telkom have launched the Synchronous Cross Connect (SXA), after a successful trail period spanning several months.
Rolf Spaeth, the divisional manager of the Telkom Key Account at Siemens Telecommunications, said: ''The Synchronous Cross Connect system has many benefits for Telkom in that when the number of subscribers and bandwidth grows, it will be easier to upgrade with additional traffic interfaces. This will allow Telkom to react faster and be more flexible on tomorrow's requirements", he said.
"In addition, Spaeth said the transport system is an ideal gateway as it includes coloured interfaces for Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM) applications which are perfect for evolving from standard transmission to optical networks."
The SXA is a Digital Wide-band Cross-connect system with many switching granularity. Its basic functionality is the capability to establish semi-permanent connections across the incoming network traffic and to support a continuous monitoring of the quality of the incoming channels. In case of dedicated signal failures or signal degradation, network protection schemes will automatically restore the traffic service.
In general, the deployment of the SXA will provide Telkom with more freedom and ease of network augmentation, and has proven more cost-effective.
The first order was received last March, with Pretoria North identified as the launch site. Forty-two of the 58 systems have already been installed throughout the country.
''Our installation team consisted of local subcontractors, with the cables manufactured by a local company," concluded Spaeth.
