Transtel to award multimillion-rand tender

Transtel, the telecommunications division of transport utility Transnet, is set to award a multimillion-rand tender for the supply of flexible multiplex equipment for its telecoms infrastructure.

The closing date for tender submissions was extended to 9 May, notes Errol Johnson, senior buyer at Transtel`s supply chain management division. He adds that 12 companies submitted proposals, though not all of them are from the ICT sector.

"The tender is for the supply, testing and commissioning of time division multiplexing [TDM] equipment and associated interfaces for transmission over - including coaxial tubes, physical pair or optical fibres," he explains.

Two-year contract

Michael Nutall, head of Transtel`s transmission networks, says it is difficult to apply a definite value to the tender because it is a contract for services over a period of two years.

However, he describes the tender as "a multimillion-rand capex project".

Nutall says: "This is an important contract for our capital works programme - there are a number of transmission projects under way."

The project will replace obsolete equipment and generally improve Transtel`s infrastructure, and forms a large part of the organisation`s recapitalisation strategy, he adds.
