The first component, from a client perspective, enables PC users to receive from their ISP a Windows version of PC-cillin (Windows 95,98, NT 4.0 or Windows 2000). The PC-cillin product is available from a dedicated PC-cillin ISP Server, and thereafter all PC-cillin updates are automatically taken care of via the PC-cillin ISP Server."
"From an ISP perspective, the solution is powered by a Linux server that is able to support half a million client records as well as process 2000 simultaneous client accesses". "This solution has high scalability, using "master" and "slave" mechanism enabling load balancing between client and server communication among the appliances", says Biehn. The high reliability appliance provides 24x7 monitoring service with a built-in external Database backup facility. The PC-cillin management console displays client status information. This information includes, amongst other things, what viruses have been found and what the product update status is for each client.
PC-Cillin for ISP Server's highly secure design allows for the implementation of Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) as well as the ability of Registration and Subscription based service including Open API for ISP subscription and billing System. This also provides an easy and secure way for the ISP to provide pattern, engine and program update service.
"The solution is a win-win for both ISP and subscribing client. For the client, the onus of ongoing maintenance of virus protection process is now taken care of by the ISP for the client, whilst at the same time, it provides a way of augmenting the ISP's annuity business," says Biehn.
