Trend Micro continues lead in anti-virus software market for Internet gateway, mail servers

Johannesburg, 11 Sep 2003

Secure , a member of the JSE-listed ERP.com Group, and the southern African distributor for Trend security software, today announced that according to the recent study by International Corporation (IDC) entitled "Worldwide Antivirus Software Forecast and Analysis, 2003-2007: Return of the Consumer" Trend Micro is the worldwide market leader, for the third consecutive year, in both of the following segments:

* Internet gateway market with over 39% market share.

* Mail server market with almost 21% market share Trend Micro was also named the fastest growing anti-virus vendor for the file server segment, based on 2002 revenues. Between 2001 and 2002, Trend Micro exceeded the overall anti-virus software industry growth, with a growth rate of 32%.

"The enormous increase in the number of Internet users and Internet commerce underline the need for consistent, market proven security solutions," stated Brian Burke, research manager at IDC. "Over the years, Trend Micro has proven to be an enterprise technology market leader in the security space with the kind of vision and innovation needed to address evolving Internet threats."

Pioneering the first server-based gateway anti-virus products in 1996, Trend Micro has established itself as an award-winning innovator and thought leader in the enterprise space. In 2003, Trend Micro introduced the first dedicated HTTP/FTP security solution specifically designed for the demands of enterprise customers, and introduced Trend Micro Spam Prevention Service, to combat unsolicited e-mails directly at the Internet gateway.

IDC also believes a layered security approach, involving multi-level anti-virus working alongside content filtering and firewalls, will prove to be a more effective means of securing home and remote corporate users. Analysts recognised a future trend towards hybrid or "blended" threats, designed to push past point-solution security systems. For example, the most recent version of the Sobig worm utilised its own SMTP engine to mass-mail itself, and downloads a payload from specific URLs; gateway products at both the SMTP and HTTP stream would be key to helping block the entry and the effects of this worm. Due to the proliferation of Internet-based threats, security vendors well versed with the Internet gateway market are likely to be better equipped to deal with threats quickly and efficiently.

"Trend Micro was first to the gateway anti-virus market and has sustained leadership for four years in this market segment. Early on, we acknowledged the potential damage from Internet threats, and combined our anti-virus expertise with gateway experience to focus on anticipating our customers' needs," said Steve Chang, Chairman and CEO of Trend Micro. "IDC's findings confirm Trend Micro's key role as leader and innovator in the anti-virus market."

IDC forecasts the anti-virus software market will increase to reach $4.4 billion by 2007, with significant market share from corporate customers, and customers in North America and Western Europe. Gateway and mail server applications are expected to comprise nearly 90% of this market within the next five years. Trend Micro has become a recognised name in these markets, garnering awards for its Enterprise Protection Strategy initiative from Network Magazine and PC Magazine in the United States and Europe (2003), and winning the European Customer Development Award from Frost & Sullivan (2002).
