Trend Micro delivers Internet gateway antivirus and content security solution for HP-UX and Linux

Johannesburg, 29 Sep 2000

SecureData, an ERP.com company and the exclusive sub-Saharan distributors of Trend Micro Inc, a leading provider of enterprise antivirus and content software for the Internet age, today announced the development of InterScan VirusWall 3.6 and InterScan eManager 3.5 for the HP-UX and Linux platforms. Trend Micro's InterScan VirusWall provides high-performance three-in-one Internet gateway against viruses in SMTP, HTTP and FTP traffic. Trend Micro's InterScan eManager is a content filtering plug-in to InterScan VirusWall that provides network administrators with a set of Internet email controls aimed at protecting intellectual property, enhancing employee productivity, and providing file blocking capabilities during virus emergencies. Together, Trend Micro's InterScan VirusWall and eManager provide a proactive solution for protecting organisations against the continued onslaught of Internet and email-borne viruses and other malicious content.

Trend Micro pioneered the concept of Internet gateway virus scanning when it introduced InterScan VirusWall in October of 1995 and has lead the industry with innovative, patented antivirus technology solutions ever since. Today, InterScan VirusWall is one of the most stable and scalable antivirus solutions on the market. The latest combined versions of InterScan VirusWall and InterScan eManager now bring their award-winning technologies to the HP-UX and Linux operating systems, supporting HP-UX versions 10.20 and 11.0, and Red Hat Linux versions 6.1 and 6.2.

The Unix "flavoured" platforms have long been popular for their stable, large-scale support of data centres and mission critical applications. In fact, according to International Data Corporation (IDC), Linux has become the world's No. 2 server operating system.

With InterScan VirusWall and eManager, organisations can avoid shutting down their email servers during emergency virus events, minimising downtime of mission critical communications. With eManager's content filtering capabilities, administrators can create rules to block messages containing words or phrases associated with emails carrying virus-infected attachments.

Administrators can also choose to block certain file attachments as a preventative measure while waiting for an updated virus pattern file to be released. In addition, InterScan VirusWall and eManager provide administrators with the tools that they need to deal with the increased distribution of company confidential and inappropriate information.

"With the availability of Trend Micro's InterScan VirusWall and eManager for HP-UX and Linux, organisations have at their disposal a valuable tool for managing viruses, spam, and message content," says Wayne Biehn, SecureData Sales Director. "Enterprises can continue to count on Trend Micro's best-of-breed technology to meet the antivirus and content filtering needs of today's complex networks."

InterScan eManager 3.5 for HP-UX and Linux

InterScan eManager provides intelligent content control over email system by enabling administrators to control message content, block file attachments, and filter spam. eManager 3.5 for HP-UX and Linux features include:

An email content filter to block email based on certain keywords or phrases, enabling administrators to stop potentially infected email messages from being delivered to unsuspecting users and to prevent distribution of confidential or inappropriate information into or out of the enterprise. Filter profiles are based on keyword lists, Boolean ("not") keyword lists and synonyms. Blocked email can be deleted, quarantined or archived.

A file attachment blocking feature that allows administrators to block incoming files by file name, type, etc., while still permitting other non-threatening email to pass through. During email virus alert situations (such as this year's Love Bug), administrators can use the file blocking feature to block emails with suspicious file attachments instead of being forced to shut the email system down to protect the system.

A rule-based spam filter to block junk mail before it reaches a company's mail server. The spam filter includes both a self-updating list of common spam sources and a customisable list of sources. The filter checks message headers (to, from, cc and subject fields) for routing domain, in-bound/out-bound status and message size, and checks the message body for designated keywords and phrases.

InterScan VirusWall 3.6 for HP-UX and Linux

Trend InterScan VirusWall provides high-performance three-in-one Internet gateway protection against viruses in SMTP, HTTP and FTP traffic. Virus scanning occurs at the server, so it is transparent to end-users. InterScan also detects and blocks potentially harmful ActiveX and Java code.

Flexible configuration allows administrators to select real-time, pre-scheduled or manual scanning. All routine tasks - such as web-based updates, reporting and alerting may also be automatically scheduled at the administrator's convenience. Customisable virus warning messages may be sent automatically to file recipients, senders and/or the administrator. A comprehensive activity log maintains the details of each infected file or attempted violation. Central management is handled through a web-based console, the Trend Virus Control System, enabling administrators to enforce Internet content security policy from a local or remote location.

Availability

InterScan eManager 3.5 for HP-UX and Linux will be available worldwide (temporarily excluding Japan) in the fourth quarter of 2000. For more information please visit Trend's Web site at http://www.antivirus.com or call SecureData on +27(11) 257-8600.
