Trend Micro enterprise protection strategy wins PC Magazine Editors' Choice Award for corporate anti-virus software

Johannesburg, 09 Apr 2003

Secure , a member of the JSE-listed ERP.com Group, and the southern African distributor for Trend Micro security software, today announced that the latter, a worldwide leader in network anti-virus and Internet content security, was the winner of the PC Magazine Editors' Choice Award for corporate anti-virus software.

Trend Micro EPS was chosen for the award over products from Symantec, Network Associates and Sophos. Editors pointed out that Trend Micro EPS offers a desktop-to-gateway solution combined with an extensive support infrastructure.

"For great end-to-end anti-virus coverage, with unique strengths in outbreak containment, you need look no further than EPS," editors wrote. "Its Trend Micro Outbreak Commander, detailed help, custom policies and extensive support make it a good choice for busy administrators."

In addition, the editors wrote: "A Web-based interface that lets you administer from anywhere and the best rollback capabilities of the bunch earn EPS our Editors' Choice."

"Trend Micro is honoured that Enterprise Protection Strategy has been singled out for the PC Magazine Editors' Choice award for corporate anti-virus software," commented Steve Chang, Chairman and CEO of Trend Micro. "EPS was designed to provide an innovative solution based on outbreak prevention and damage cleanup that's unique in our industry for the ever-increasing problem of mixed malicious code threats."

Through EPS, Trend Micro products give IT unique protection and flexibility. The latest generation of anti-virus and content security products that support Trend Micro Enterprise Protection Strategy were included in the review. Editors singled out Trend Micro InterScan Messaging Security Suite (IMSS), which provides policy-based anti-virus protection and content security for the messaging gateway, as the only gateway product in the roundup to offer both SMTP and POP 3 protection. "Like the McAfee and Symantec products, IMSS offers heuristic and archive scanning," editors noted. "But, it goes beyond these by letting administrators set message size, session size, number of connections and queue load limits, sizes and locations to optimise throughput. The policy manager lets you create address groups for policy setting."

Trend Micro ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange was also well received by PC Magazine editors for its 'strong' e-mail server protection. "Unlike the other products here, ScanMail can download a local copy of updates to share with clients or other servers," they said. "Information-starved administrators will love its thorough logging, with filtered views and CSV export."

Trend Micro virus SLA provides customer support for EPS

Editors also gave high marks for the wide range of support choices for corporate customers, from "friendly toll-free support" to a "unique" penalty-backed, detection commitment for customer submitted virus cases, part of Trend Micro virus response service level agreement (SLA).

In an accompanying review of consumer anti-virus products, editors also singled out Trend Micro PC-cillin 2003 for its easy installation and interface, integrated firewall and free technical support.

"By including anti-virus, firewall, PDA and wireless protection, PC-cillin 2003 covers all major Internet security threats and provides protection without requiring any adjustments," editors said. "A unique Wi-Fi protection feature lets you click a button to block all incoming traffic on a wireless network connection."

Trend Micro enterprise protection strategy

Trend Micro launched EPS in May 2002 to address mixed threat attacks such as Code Red and Nimda. It coordinates Trend Micro products and services and the expertise of TrendLabs, a global network of anti-virus research and support centres, to address each stage of the outbreak lifecycle: outbreak prevention, virus response and assessment and restoration. Its Web-based interface, Trend Micro Control Manager, is the core of EPS, and provides centralised management and enterprise-wide coordination for all Trend Micro anti-virus and content security products and services.
