SecureData, a member of the JSE-listed ERP.com Group, and the southern African distributor for Trend security software, today announced the introduction of Trend Micro InterScan Web Security Suite v2.0, which now brings together anti-virus, anti-phishing, anti-spyware and URL filtering capabilities into one integrated platform, providing new levels of performance and security for Web traffic.
Introduced in 2003 as the industry's first dedicated HTTP/FTP Internet gateway anti-virus solution, Trend Micro InterScan Web Security Suite complements SMTP-focused solutions without compromising Web download speeds while still allowing for greater architectural flexibility. With a dedicated Web-traffic solution, IT administrators can stop viruses like Netsky and Bagle, which are as likely to enter a corporate network through Web-based e-mail as they are through SMTP e-mail, without sacrificing the Web performance they want.
Trend Micro InterScan Web Security Suite v2.0 now offers improved Internet gateway security for Web users with new capabilities for anti-phishing, anti-spyware, and URL filtering.
Anti-phishing
As a complementary line of defence to inbound SMTP-focused e-mail scanning solutions, Trend Micro InterScan Web Security Suite v2.0 is designed to prevent users from becoming victims of phishers, who send out seemingly legitimate e-mails that are designed to deceive users to go to fake Web sites and give out personal information such as credit card numbers or passwords. InterScan Web Security Suite enables IT administrators to stop users from going to such Web sites.
According to the Anti-Phishing Working Group, an industry association, the number of new phishing attacks reported per month jumped from just over 400 to more than 1 100 from March to April 2004. Research firm Gartner estimated 57 million adults have received e-mails from phishers, mostly within the last year. (Gartner First Take: "Phishing Attack Victims Likely Targets for Identity Theft", May 2004.)
Spyware
Spyware, typically designed to capture and send information about a user's Web surfing habits, can also be created for malicious purposes, like establishing backdoors, recording keystrokes, and capturing personal information. Trend Micro's scanning engine is designed to block known malicious spyware and allows IT administrators to block other unwanted spyware, helping to protect corporate data, passwords, e-mail addresses and confidential information, free system resources and reduce spyware-associated crashes.
URL filtering
By reducing inappropriate Web usage, companies can more productively use network resources, increase employee productivity, and reduce exposure to security threats and potential legal liability. A new, optional URL Filtering module in Trend Micro InterScan Web Security Suite v2.0 allows organisations to enforce Web usage policies under one simplified, secure and coordinated management console.
"The Web is an increasingly critical business tool, but also a potential security, legal and productivity liability for organisations," said Peter Firstbrook, Program Director for META Group. "Integrating multiple products required to enforce acceptable use and security policy for all outbound browser-based traffic (the "Web Gateway") is a major pain point for organisations. We expect Web Gateway tools, such as URL filtering, anti-virus/anti-spyware, and active content control tools, will merge in major vendor platforms to simplify implementation of secure Internet access."
Trend Micro InterScan Web Security Suite has evolved to provide corporate customers and service providers with an integrated single-point solution at the gateway for various types of Web traffic security.
As part of Trend Micro Enterprise Protection Strategy, Trend Micro InterScan Web Security Suite integrates with other Trend Micro products and services, such as Trend Micro InterScan Messaging Security Suite for SMTP scanning and Trend Micro Control Manager for centralised management, to deliver a flexible easy-to-manage set of tools for outbreak prevention, management and reporting.
